How do I update my blue ray players firmware?

Blu-Ray players need firmware upgrades?

  • I was just at a Best Buy looking at Blu-Ray players. This salesman was telling me that as the discs evolve, improve?, an owner of one of these Blu-Ray players will need to upgrade the "firmware" in the player to handle the newer discs, by connecting to the internet. That is pretty much what he said. Does any of this make sense? In my mind a BluRay disc is a BluRay disc, made to the industry standard. Maybe the WiFi or USB connection on the player is for streaming content - not to upgrade to guts of the player ??? Your comments would be welcome on this salesperson's "facts".

    Salesman is correct. Blu-ray players are now mini computers and manufacturers ship them with bugs. It is not unusual to fix the bugs or add features (say, add support for Netflix streaming or other services)

The issue is that the standard is evolving. New features (3D, changes to the file structure, changes to the disc structures, etc.) require updates to allow the new features to be used on existing devices. Some BR players can be updated through the network connection, some thru USB and some through a disc burned with code. Sometimes it's for bug fixes, but usually it's additional features that weren't originally incorporated.

That is correct. Some player do require firmware update. I own a first generation blu ray disc player from Panasonic model BD-10 and it is 4 years old. Only had one firmware update and had no issue at all playing over 300 blu ray disc movies. Panasonic is the most reliable player in the market and continuously have one being recommend by home theater magazine. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

Well he's sorta right, evolve is a good word, like old blurays need a firmware upgrade to play 3d movies. As they do more things u might well have to update but it is not something u are going to do everyday.
