How do I get my speakers to work?

Subwoofer problem. How do I get the speakers to work?

  • I ordered a subwoofer not too long ago and I thought that hooking some speakers into the "out" line would work, however no sounds come from the speakers. Do I need an amplifier or a receiver to make the speakers work? How would I hook it up after I get the proper materials?

  • Answer:

Normally the "speaker out" connections on a subwoofer are just part of a pass through from the "speaker in" connections. These speaker in/out connections simply provide a means of connecting the sub to a receiver that does not have a sub pre-amp output. The way it works, you connect the speaker output of the AVR to the speaker in on the sub. Jumpers inside the sub directly connect the speaker in to the speaker out essentially making the speaker out just an extension of the AVR speaker out. Also, the signal is sampled, routed through a low pass filter and sent to the subwoofer amplifier. So to answer your question, yes you need an amplifier. You can use an AVR with or without a sub pre-amp output. mk
