Will it affect my home theater if I mix brands between my subwoofer and the other speakers?
-
I recently decided that I want to upgrade my 5.1 surround sound, which currently is a hodge podge of speaker brands. My center channel and two surround speakers are Sony (came as a set), my two floor standing speakers are Dynalab (which I recently found out were white van speakers), and my subwooder is a Definitive Technology (a wedding gift). I've accumulated all of these speakers over the years from my older brother. Due to price, I want to buy a new center channel speaker and two floor standing speakers and will buy new surround speakers later. I plan on matching my center and floor standing speakers because I've read that it is important for sound quality, but how important is it for these speakers to match the sub? Definitive Tech floor standing speakers are very expensive.

Answer:
Matching the front 3 speakers would be great, this way the tonal tone of the sound would be the same. The rear speaker are not demanding, due to they only handle the sound effect. Sub woofer does not have to match the speakers you have. Ideal setting for a sub woofer would be 80HZ and below. Definitive Technology is a very good speaker and also more expensive than other speakers. Look at JBL, Energy, Infinity, Klipsch or Polk Audio to name a few brands that are also good. Demo them at a local store before buying them. Hope this will help you out.

Mixing and matching speaker and sub brands is not an issue. Your fronts and center channel should be the same brand and series so they timbre match. I run Klipsch speakers with HSU subs. Usually ID brand subs are the best value for the money.

If you have a preamp sub-woofer out on your receiver it should not be a problem as you will be able to adjust the sub more easily that way to fit the other speakers....take a look at Fluance speakers for a real bargain in sound..if you want to spend a more money for a little better quality sound you might want to look at Polk Audio; Boston Acoustics; or Jamo and Energy....

I would say that mixing the speakers would not affect it, unless it is of a different amperage or watt. Plus, if you already have the speakers there is nothing wrong with hooking it up and testing it.

No it is common and frequently the best way to get the best sound. Not every brand makes good subwoofers so if you don't violate the laws of wattage you should be ok to do that. Best Buy actually carries a mix matched kit of speakers.
