When will the Blu-Ray format become "mature?"?
-
Most high profile movies on DVD have been re-released about a half a dozen times in the past 13 years or so. Each time, they clean it up, use a better transfer, use a higher bitrate, use better compression software, etc. In other words, first generation DVD releases didn't look that great. Will this be repeated for Blu-Ray? Do we need to wait for or five years for "definitive" versions of our favorite movies to be released?

Answer:
This will probably not be the case with Blu-Ray movies. Blu-Ray discs have significantly more storage capacity than DVDs and this allows for very large bit-rates of around 40 Mb/s (compared to a DVD which typically has a bit-rate of about only 5 Mb/s). Blu-Ray movies also use a newer video format (MPEG-4) which has a much more advanced and sophisticated compression algorithm that can provide better picture quality using less bandwidth. In addition, there is a large expectation from consumers, the Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA) and major industry players for content producers to release only very high quality movies and transfers on Blu-Ray. If a content producer were to release a DVD quality movie or poor transfer on Blu-Ray, they would likely receive a lot of complaints and lose reputation for doing so. The Blu-Ray Disc Association could also potentially revoke their license to manufacturer and sell content on Blu-Ray Discs.

With more space, and better codecs, blu ray is about as mature as its going to get. Blu ray is almost 5 years old. So I don't see image quality being better for BD movies that are released say a few years from now. The only issue consumers need to worry about when buying BD titles is 3D. Even though movies actually shot in 3D are rare, that's not going to stop studios from converting to 3D for extra cash, and digital movies like Pixar movies can go 3D for real because it's all in a computer and making a true 3D version is possible.

Blu-ray discs look better than DVDs, but only if they're done properly. When remastered incorrectly, they have the same problems that older DVDs had. In fact, a few Blu-ray discs were re-released with better transfers after the first versions didn't look so good. The first Blu-ray releases of The Fifth Element and Full Metal Jacket were considered to be poorly done, so much so that new remastered versions were offered just a few years later. There are several Blu-ray releases that have poor transfers, due to too much digital manipulation. There have been complaints about the Blu-ray of Patton (1970) because of the heavy use of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) and Edge Enhancement (EE). DNR has a tendency to make an image appear soft, and detail is lost. EE is used to sharpen the edges that have been blurred due to DNR. By far the worst Blu-ray transfer has been Koch Video's release of the 1939 animated feature Gulliver's Travels. The film was cropped, then the image was stretched to create a 16:9 anamorphic image from a film that has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. DNR, Edge Enhancement were overdone on the public domain print used by Koch. The final results had a waxy, blurry look to it. In fact, the DVD version of the movie put out some time ago by Image Entertainment looked better than the Blu-ray by Koch! Disney also accidentally dropped a few lines of dialog from Pinocchio on the current DVD and Blu-ray release. In remastering the mono soundtrack they somehow forgot about these lines from the film. Maybe sometime in the future these problem discs will be addressed.

Absolutely, DVD will be instead of Blu ray format in the future. The history of DVD replacing VCD will repeat again.
