Can surround sound speakers be set up through 1 jack?
-
First off, i know nothing about sound drivers, speakers, or anything that has to do with the pc sound. I just bought a nice set of logitch surround sound speakers. But i noticed that they have 3 plugins, black, pink and green. I have a laptop, my laptop has two plugins, 1 green 1 pink, The green has a little headset next to it and the pink has a mic. I setup the speakers already, everything is plugged in correctly, i plugged in only 1 cord, The green one into the green jack. When go to my sound settings, and i check the properties of the speakers to try and set them up, it only gives me a "stereo" option. I tried playing some music, sound only comes from 2 speakers. My guess is, this speakers werent ment for a laptop, And that all of the cords (green pink black) need to be plugged in to play the surround sound. If this is true. My question is, Is there a way i can setup surround sound using only those 2 jacks? The green and the pink. Thank you for your time.

Answer:
Yes surround sound can be, unfortunately it appears your laptop cannot do surround sound with only the original sound card. That being said DR and Mrs Bearface is absolutely wrong. Laptops CAN do surround sound depending upon how they are built. I own 2 Macbook Pros which has a digital optical port embedded within the 3.5mm headphones jack, this is known as mini-optical or mini-toslink which is fully capable of surround sound. I use this all the time to playing back audio from my laptop. The Macbook pros and many other laptops incorporate this feature. You might check to see if your laptop offers this as well. Also, it's a common misapprehension, but the .1 channel of a surround sound track is NOT a subwoofer channel, but a LFE (low frequency effects) channel. This has been the standard in the industry for about the last decade. Because most people do not understand this them limit their home theater setups to only a 6 or 8 speaker setup without ever taking full advantage of the effects channel. The effects channel no only supplies the bass of surround sound, but also incorporates a signal used for rumble generators designed specifically to make you feel the home theater experience, not just hear it.

No, you will only get stereo. It is possible for you to get surround sound with a USB sound card, which can be expensive. The pink jack is for microphones.

Hi surround sound will not work with a laptop that is a fact of life. all you can have with a laptop is stereo, which is it's limit. bass i heard on the separate bass speaker. the pink socket is for a microphone only the green one is the output into either a set of headphones or an amplifier system. to give you stereo. for true surround sound a computer is not the best idea, digital sound is not meant to be high quality from a computer. so yes a desktop does have the facility to give a rather poor surround sound from the sound card which has a black socket as well as the normal green socket. for a type of surround sound. the green socket is for the normal from speakers from an amplifier, the amplifier will have three outputs one for each of the front speakers with out any bass, the third output will be to either drive another bass amplifier or a bass speaker. but this is a mono bass a combination of bass from both stereo channels. why i say it is a poor surround sound. then we have the black socket this to drive a rear stereo amplifier for the rear speakers. hence the so called surround sound. NEXT WE HAVE THE NEAR TO REAL SOUND AS IT IS POSSIBLE. this on a audio sound system nothing to do with computers as it is ANALOGUE. Now we come to true surround sound current system is 7.1 system this uses three stereo amplifiers and one bass output to drive yet another separate bass amplifier. And a separate centre speaker for voices on the film. still not that good but it is better than none. what you have with this system is two front speakers at least 2 meters apart, then two rear speakers again at least 2 meters apart, and on either side of the room halfway between the front and rear speakers the in between speakers. this is usually on a home sound system nothing to do with computers. often used in conjunction with a home cinema system which uses a modern television which may be LCD,LED, or a plasma screen and used with a BLU RAY player with blu ray discs. So you have the movie on the screen with the sound around the room near as it is possible to being in the cinema at home. In the actual cinema they use a 16 channel sound system all around you, to give the impression of being in the movie.
