How to connect to tv?

How can I connect speakers to tv?

  • I want to get sound from my tv into my speakers. My speaker system is a "philips multimedia speaker system" including a subwoofer and two speakers. The speakers just have a regular 3.5mm headphone jack (male) to connect. And my tv doesn't have a headphone jack (female) where I can plug it in. Therefore I bought this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cables-Go-80134-Value-Stereo/dp/B0020MLAFA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315055334&sr=8-1 , and hoped that I could connect my speakers into one end and then the rca cables into the audio output on the tv. But it doesn't seem to work. I don't know if it is because I have plugged them in the wrong place or if it just doesn't work that way. There are two pairs of red and white (rca) plugs on the tv and I have tried both but the sound still comes out the tv and not the speakers (there are no options in the tv menu to change any output). The two plugs on the tv are called Y-R and Y-L and the other one is just called R and L. It doesn't say anything about audio output anywhere, but I would guess one of them would be it. Is there any other way to connect them? Directly to my xbox maybe? Help is appreciated, Thanks

  • Answer:

Consult the user manual for your TV (you didn't mention make or model) to see what kind of audio OUTPUT (not INPUT!) you have available. Typically the RCA connectors are inputs, not outputs. Many newer flat screen TV's only have digital audio outputs which would not be compatible with your speaker system. There are converters available that can accept the digital output and convert it to analog line level output compatible with your amplified speakers. You will need to determine whether you have optical or coaxial digital audio output to determine what converter will work. Alternately, you could connect the speaker system directly to another audio source, like your cable box or xbox, as those generally have line level analog audio outputs
