Why is my cable box causing interference?

How can I fix the interference I'm getting from my cable box?

  • I just recently got a new cable box (Comcast), and notice a humming sound (like the speakers are turned up too loud) and a wavy picture. The effects are magnified when I try other devices (Playstation or DVD player), though when I unplug the cable from the TV, the interference goes away. I've tried a standard coaxial cable and component (Yellow, Red, White) connections, and get the problem with both. Yet, these are my only 2 choices.

  • Answer:

    stop interferring with it

It sounds like a ground-loop, or other grounding problem. The cable might be picking up 60 Hz AC on the shield. Make sure the cable shield is grounded at the service entrance.

Do not play nor use any other devices on the same electrical outlet such as Play station, computer, microwaves, cordless telephones and stereos. Make sure your theater is connested to a surge protector. Install line filters on each device you have.
