Is is easy to connect a home cinema system to my PS3?

Help setting up a great Home Cinema system?

  • Bit of a broad question but any help would be appreciated. I would like to invest in a better audio set up with my 50" plasma. Looking at the cinema systems available, it seems all of them come with a blu ray player or dvd player. What I am looking for is the components to go with my PS3, Sky HD and Xbox HD DVD player to make up a 5.1 (or 7.1 - not sure which to go for) system. Im a complete beginner at this so can someone just tell me if the below logic is correct? I would need the following: A receiver (such as the Yamaha RX-V667) Optical cables for ps3-receiver and sky hd-receiver (How can I connect the xbox 360 to the system when video and audio go through hdmi?) Speakers to connect to the receiver (5 or 7) Can all these be bought seperatly? I dont want to buy a home cinema system that comes with a blu ray player because I already have one. Thanks

There's a few things to say in reply to this question. The first thing is the 'Consumer Electrical Sales Manager' must work for Curry's or Comet because he hasn't the slightest idea what he's talking about. Second, I'm not altogether convinced you're not trolling as your choice of AV receiver somewhat voids the idea that you don't know anything about the subject. Are you aware that you are looking at spending upwards of £500 on a speaker package to release that receivers full potential? That receiver has 6 HDMI inputs and one output, all your HDMI capable components connect direct to it and one HDMI goes out to your TV, there should be no need for any optical connects. An AV receiver and separate speaker package is definately the way to go, but go to a proper Hi-Fi store for it like Richersounds or Superfi, although they want to make a sale, they do know what they're talking about. PS, proper Hi-Fi stores don't sell Bose equipment, need I say more?

Isitme' s answer is correct. If you buy Yamaha 667 receiver then you don't need optical cables for audio. You just connect HDMI from PS3, Sky HD and Xbox to receiver and another HDMI from receiver to TV for video.

The best set up is the simplest: connect all devices to your TV as normal (using HDMI/SCART) and connect your TV to your home cinema DVD or bluray using an optical cable. This will take any sound that would normally come out your TV (for example PS3 or sky) through your home cinema speakers. It's your call whether you choose 5.1 or 7.1. I guess it depends on how big your room is or your budget. Home cinemas are very rare without a DVD or bluray but they do exist. I simply bought the 2.1 Bose Companion 3 connected to the headphone port on the TV. The sound quality is far superior to most home cinemas below £900 and it only cost £200. That would be my recommendation

The most important piece of information is missing from your question - how much do you want to spend? Home cinema setups can cost from around £300, right up to £300,000. What can be recommended will depend on what you want to pay for it.
