How do I hook a computer up to a 5.1 surround sound receiver so that all speakers are recognized?
-
I recently hooked up my computer to my Sony 5.1 surround sound receiver. The sound card I have is an Audigy 4 and I connect the two using an optical cable. The speakers on my receiver will broadcast the sound from my computer in all channels, however when I run diagnostics, only the front right and left are recognized correctly by the computer (it sends test sounds through the speakers labeling them, so the front left will say "Front Left" and the right will do likewise but no sound comes out of the other 3 speakers during this test). So while the speakers work, they are in effect only broadcasting 2.1 instead of 5.1. I have messed around with the settings quite a bit but cannot get the card to correctly broadcast sound in the other 3 channels during diagnostics. Is it incapable of recognizing 5.1 when pushing the signal through a receiver?

Answer:
Your audigy card only supports 2 channels of test tones, not all channels. As you are running to a receiver you should just send the full level signals and let the receiver do its signal management job. Your receiver should be able to generate test signals, or get the right test DVD and run thru the computer or a separate DVD player you could even borrow one to get the set up complete.

I think you are on the right track. I recall having a similar -- and very frustrating -- problem several years back with an Audigy card and some self powered surround speakers (Yamaha, I believe). I had either an optical connection from the computer to the controller for the speakers (analogous to your receiver) and could not get surround. The solution was one of the settings buried in the Audigy software. At the moment I can't recall exactly which setting it was. I know it was pretty obscure and non-intuitive!) so keep look at the settings (by default the Audigy was set for stereo) and it needs to be reset to 5.1 surround. Hope this helps.

Hi, Your sound card supports 5.1 auidio, so the software came with it must have the option. The manual shoud tell you how to set it up on your computer. Good Luck!
