Good deal on LCD HDTV Monitor?

Buying an LCD monitor vs HDTV?

  • Hey everybody, I just finished building a Media Center pc, and was wondering which technology I should go with, LCD monitor or HDTV. 1. My understanding is that an HDTV is just the same as an LCD monitor, except it includes a tuner and some extra inputs, correct? 2. If I buy a monitor it will be native at 1920x1080 or higher, so there shouldn't be a noticeable difference in quality from an "HD" TV right? 3. Know any good quality PCI-E tv tuner cards? Thanks, Tim Otto

  • Answer:

Your pretty much correct all-though if you plan on watching video some monitors have a terrible response time which would give you a pixelated and blurry image when watching things move around on the screen quickly. Try to get a monitor or HDTV with a 6ms response time or better. (lower the better). I do installation for Digital EDGE in Maryland www.GetDtvReady.com and I can tell you that LCD tvs with bad pixel response time will really disappoint you.

an "HDtv" is not a type of tv, like LCD, but it really just describes the tv. Basically you have a few main types of HDTVs: -LCD -plasma -DLP LCD and plasma are the two most popular. For a native resolution of 1920x1080, you would want a 1080p HDTV LCD or plasma. Both of these types of TVs produce great picture quality, but with a few main differences. LCDs have less glare because of the type matte surface they use for the screen, so you can use it in brighter rooms. Plasma TVs have a gloss finish on the screen, which gives them more glare. But, plasmas are able to achieve blacks much better than LCD screens. Another problem is that a plasma tv's bulb is typically non-replaceable, and when it goes out after, say 7 years or so, you are stuck having to buy a new television. I currently have a 32 inch Samsung HD LCD tv, which I have connected to my laptop through an HDMI port, and it works great. Connections on the back of HDTVs typically include a few HDMI ports, which gives you the true 1080p HD quality; a few component inputs, which will only give you the lesser 720p HD quality (1280x720). I suggest you connect your computer using the HDMI if possible, to get the best quality
