The receivers and I presume some amps that are ipod compatible?

Would this hook up prove to be a better overall sound because how these units translate or decode the music material? They advertise as nifty and compatible but when the rubber meets the road is this a better mouse trap for audiophiles? http://reviews.cnet.com/2795-6466_7-533.html?tag=rb_content;carouselMain Thanks.

Answer:
You can get just as good or better sound quality if you have 3.5mm to rca stereo cable. This will plug in to any receiver. The front usb ports are mostly for convenience. Some receivers will let you control the ipod thru the receiver or remote, but it is usually much easier to just control things with the ipod itself.
