Home theater audio optical cable surround sound help?

Surround sound with xbox 360?

  • I am wondering how to get my xbox to work with my surround sound. Currently I own an Insignia Home Theater/DVD system. For the xbox I have the video/audio cable that splits in two and has the regular Red, Yellow and White inputs as well as Red, Blue and Green inputs. When playing I plug the Red, Blue and Green input cables into my 480i HDTV then plug the Red, Yellow and White into the theater system. Only two of the speakers and the sub woofer will work however. I have read that you must use an optical cable for 5.1 surround sound but my theater system doesn't appear to have an optical output but my TV does. Is there another way to get the other 3 speakers working? The theater system/DVD player has the following output jacks: Coaxial out S-Video out Component/Progressive video out: Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr (Green, Blue and Red) Rec out: Yellow, White and Red It also includes two sets of jacks, six total, so you can plug audio/video cables into the theater system. Any help is much appreciated.

  • Answer:

Most Home Theater in a box are not flexible for additional input like an optical. Yes, to be able to get the surround sound you need to use an HDMI, optical or coax cable from your xbox 360 to the receiver or home theater. Without this you do not get surround sound. Your tv might have an optical output have not sure weather it will have the surround sound because it does not have the decoder for Dolby Digital and DTS, beside that you still need the receiver or the home theater to produce the sound.

from what you said, the only option of hooking your xbox to your HT is red and white cables (you don't need yellow, its for video which you already have hooked to your tv) check you home theater system to see if it can do a 5CH STEREO option, its not actual 5.1 audio but it speads the 2CH input to all the speakers if it can't then IDK what else to tell you

The Xbox has an optical output that you can use to connect to your system through the coaxial input. You would need a converter for changing optical to coax though, if your system lacks the optical input. You can get one here: http://www.uniqueproductsonline.com/tooptococodi.html Using this will give you 5.1 from your Xbox, I have used it before and it works well.
