Hope you can help

  • Answer:

You are running into a basic problem with most new TVs. They will output digital audio that comes from the TV tuner, but will not pass through digital audio from any external device. That means you have to connect your DVD player's digital audio output directly to your audio system. Your audio system should have an A/V receiver that has multiple inputs as well as volume controls, tone controls etc. Connect the audio output from the TV and the audio output from the DVD to the A/V receiver and select which one to listen to. If you do not have a multple-input receiver, then you can get digital audio switches to select the input.

Does your speaker system have an amplifier that allows inputs ( RCA (those red and white cables) or fiber optic) If so, You can run the output sound of the tv to the input sound on the amplifier, and you will always have sound out of your speaker set. If the "surround sound" doesn't always work - that's because the speaker system doesn't think it needs to play surround sound. You could re-wire the side speakers and the front speakers into the same slot. Let me know if you don't know what I'm speaking about.
