Does anyone make a surround sound system with ceiling speakers?
-
My new house will have ceiling mounted rear speakers and I want to know if anyone makes a good 5.1 surround sound system with bookshelf speakers in front, and ceiling speakers in back. The reason I look for a complete system is to keep sound quality consistent. I don't want speakers to sound like they don't go together or like they don't complement each other. Thanks!

Answer:
You begin from a false premise, buying a complete system is the last thing you want to do for getting the best sound quality. No single manufacturer makes the best of everything! The speakers especially should not be made by an electronics company like Sony etc. You're not going to find an HTiB with bookshelf speakers and ceiling speakers packaged together anyway. The first thing you need to do is find an AVR (Audio Video Receiver) from Onkyo, Denon, HK, or other. This is a receiver, it should Not come with speakers or a Blu-Ray player. You want to buy the components separately, the receiver, the player, the speakers... The very best systems even break down the receiver to a pre-amp and separate power amplifiers. Some break down the power amplifiers to single channel mono blocks and some even break these down to separate power supply and amplifier. The more broken down into separate components the better. Of course cost goes up significantly going this route so usually the more practical solution for the average consumer is to just stay with the receiver. Speakers are the most subjective component and thus will require you to base your decision on listening test. Just stay away from Bose and stay away from electronics companies like Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, etc. Go with a company that specializes in making speakers. You were given some incorrect information in an earlier response, there is no "wattage matching" with the receiver when choosing speakers. This whole wattage thing is one area of audio with a lot of misconception. Of course this can be taken to an extreme and you could connect some little cracker jack speaker capable of only 3 watts on a good day and blow it up with a true 100 watts but as long as you are considering reasonable speaker choices the power of the speaker vs the receiver is not a concern. Speaker power capability is actually very complex and can not be expressed by a single number. The number the manufacturer gives you is a very gross estimation but will vary dramatically depending on frequency and conditions. Also, speaker power is not like the power rating of a light bulb, its more like the amperage rating of a fuse. The speaker power rating has nothing to do with its output. Don't wast money on expensive cables, especially Monster Cable. It's highly debatable that even the most expensive cables make any difference even on the highest resolution most expensive systems so it's definitely not going to make a difference on a mass market system. Use heavy enough gauge, at least 16 ga minimum for very short distances and 14 or 12 ga for longer distances. You may want to stay within the same brand and model line when choosing your main and center speaker. Your surrounds can be a different brand if your taste tells you a different one sounds better. The subwoofer will also likely be a different brand from your speakers. There are a few companies that make really good subwoofers like SVS and HSU but these may be out of your price range. A good sub is about $2000. mk

You can buy a surround sound receiver and hook and match most any speaker to it, be it bookshelf, hidden anywhere or whatever. Just make sure the wattage matches up with your receivers output wattage. By what your saying, you want to go the expensive way, I would do this myself. Visit your local electronics store and see what they put together for you. Just tell them you want a matched system, but not normal speakers. They can help you, I am sure.

Well - you just hook up the speaker wires for the rear speakers to the rear outputs of your receiver and it will work. But there will be a tone shift if sounds swirl around because of: * Ceiling speakers vs in-room speakers * Tone differences from ceiling speakers and in-room speakers. My advice - get 3 decent front speakers from a real speaker company and wire everything up and level-adjust the sound or use the built in calibration routine on the receiver. Live with this system for a few weeks and it will probably be fine. "I don't want speakers to sound like they don't go together.." The 'better' thing to do is to buy 3 more identical ceiling speakers and hire a company that installs home theater gear to install them so all 5 speakers are in the ceiling (but use an external subwoofer.) Nobody makes any system with some speakers in-room and some in-wall. The enclosure changes the sound a bit so you can never make the two match. But critical sounds like voices with dialog or specific effects tend to focus on the front 3 speakers so having the rear 2 speakers in the ceiling wont be too bad. Try to get an AV Receiver with the Audissy calibration circuit (the one with the microphone to calibrate the speakers). While it wont do a perfect match - it does a pretty good job.

You need a receiver to power those speaker you want to use either bookshelf or floor standing. Just about every receiver is cable of powering any speakers you buy. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on receivers and speakers. The top brand for entry level receiver are the Pioneer and Onkyo. You can choose from 5.1 or a 7.1 system. Hope this will help you out.

Topnotch reply Maniac, you saved a me a shyteload of typing. I vote for separate components and never ever ceiling speakers for surround.
