Does the MacBook play Blue Ray DVDs? or High Def DVDs?

Can you play normal dvds on blu ray players?

  • I was thinking of getting a blu ray player some point in the future and I was wondering if they can play normal dvds as well as blu-ray dvds or do they just take blu-ray dvds?

  • Answer:

As others have (correctly) replied all Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray disks and DVDs. Msot will play CDs and may play certain other types of disks (Divx, SACD) and file formats (e.g. jpeg images, MP3 audio) but you have to check the specific player specs. What others DIDN'T say is that Blu-ray players not only play DVDs, they upconvert the DVD to psuedo high definition (as long as you connect to an HD display (e.g. HD projector or HDTV) using an HDMI or component cable. While never as good as Blu-ray (you can't put in detail that isn't in the original DVD), upconverted DVD CAN look pretty darn good. Note that Blu-ray disks look essentially identical on all Blu-ray players, but DVD image quality varies with the quality/sophistication on the video processor chip.
