Can I hook up a subwoofer to my receiver?

Is there a way i can hook up a subwoofer to my receiver?

  • my receiver has one of those subwoofer outputs that you hook an amp up to(its like an RCA output) i dont have an amp but is there a way that i could hook one up? like get an RCA cable and cut the other end off and hook it up to my subwoofer? i know that i could just hook my sub up to my speaker outputs but it gets no bass that way really

    Is your sub passive? More than likely you have a issue with the down mix in your receiver and need to make adjustment. The Sub output is a signal level and will not power your passive sub. You can either get a powered sub (cheapest solution) or get a mono amp for your sub (big bucks but if the sub is a good model do this) You also neglected to provide model number for anything so a general answer is all you can expect. e-mail more detail and you will get a more precise answer.

Once again, if your Sub only has speaker jacks (no RCAs) then you'll need an amp (just like everyone's saying). You are wrong about using speaker outputs , for years that is the only way to hook up a sub, it is perfectly alright to hook up a sub that way. To use another amp for powering up your sub you would need an pre-amp output to hook up another amp for your sub.. So unless your receiver has a pre-amp output, there is no other way to hook it up.
