Does the MacBook play Blue Ray DVDs? or High Def DVDs?

Can you play DVDs and CDs on a Blu-Ray player?

  • Hi everybody! So, my DVD player crapped out and I'm thinking about going Blu-Ray, but I'd still like to be able to watch all my standard DVDs. Now, as far as I understand, Blu-Ray players will play standard DVDs, but I thought I'd double-check. Can you play standard DVDs on a Blu-Ray player? And, if you can play standard DVDs on a Blu-Ray player, do those movies look good on screen or do they look wonky? Like, I've found that watching an old VHS tape on an HD TV often makes the movie look more grainy than it would look on an old tube TV because the HD TV is trying to find crisper detail than the tape can provide. Would the same kind of thing happen with playing a standard DVD in a Blu-Ray player? Also, can Blu-Ray players play CDs? PS: I have an HD TV, if that matters. Thanks!

    Yes they can, but they do NOT convert DVDs to true high-definition. They upscale the DVDs so that the TV doesn't have to, but the improvement in picture quality is usually negligible.

Blu Ray players can play Blu Ray discs, DVD's & CD's. This question is answered on this forum several times a week. Upconverting Blu Ray players can make DVD's look pretty good. This question is also answered several times a week.

Blu-Ray players can play DVDs and CDs. And most brand name Blu-Ray players will upconvert the quality of a DVD to look a little better. I recommend getting a Sony or Samsung one. (Sony invented Blu-Ray but Samsung's look promising too).

My Sony Blu ray that is connected to the Internet will actually download the Info about the CD display the Album cover on the TV screen the name of the CD the artist and the song playing....also plays DVD's better than they looked on my old DVD player and also plays mp3; with all the info listed... connects to many internet radio stations, pandora slacker etc..it will download movies from the Internet both free older movies and pay for current ones... also connects to you tube and plays any video they have and more... some things I have not had time to explore yet but it does about 10 times the amount I would have expected for the price.
