How do I use my car speakers with my home system?

Using a power inverter to run a home theater reciever in back of car?

  • so im trying to set up a sony home theater system to run off a power inverter plugged into my car. the reason is for a tailgater and we want a little more noise then car speakers. so is it possible to use a car power inverter to run a receiver that has 3 speakers plugged into it? if so what size inverter will I need and what problems might I run into? thanks for your time I WILL SELECT BEST ANSWER

    I'm guessing it can be done but you will want to check how many amps/watts the receiver needs and how much a specific inverter can put out. I'm also guessing that you might only get a few hours out of your battery before it dies. Maybe get a generator instead?

Check the label of all plugged in equipment for power ratings. Add them up. Multiply that answer by 1.25. Get a power inverter that is at least that high in rating. You may find that you can't use the accessory jack as it is 15 amps * 12 Volts or 180 watts. It might be 20 amps for 240 Watts. Be VERY careful if you try to use your car battery as you might not be able to start the car. Better yet, run it off a Marine Deep Discharge battery or three. These are designed to be able to run down without hurting the charge. Charge them up again with a standard car battery charger. You can get inverters that use Alligator clips to batteries rather than an accessory jack.

Use a power inverter that can deliver a continuous power output in watts at least equal to 1.5 times the rated RMS output power of the receiver you are using. Enjoy, X-man
