Will the TV cables work with tv?

Will a plasma TV with a digital audio output connect/work with a stereo system with RCA component cables?

  • Help! I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic Plasma TV (model number TC-P42S2) which only has a single digital audio output. I want to know if this connection will connect to an external shelf stereo system using RCA Red and White audio inputs (I just want to use the stereo as external speakers). I currently own an older Samsung LCD (model number LN32A450) which does this perfectly using the Red and White component cables because it has R/W/Y audio output. What are my options? The stereo sounds great and I don't want to spend the money on new audio quite yet. Thanks

    Most HDTVs have an optical (digital) audio out and that won't work with a red/white stereo (analog) input on an amplifier. You CAN buy a digital to analog converter box, but the cheaper ones won't work if the TV outputs Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The 1st link has a selection but check the TV manual and READ THE SMALL PRINT CAREFULLY before buying a converter. The second link is to a cheaper source for a basic converter. Remember you need cables to hook it up with.

No. All tv only have an optical audio output which has to be connected to a receiver or a home theater in a box with optical audio input. It is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder. Stereo systems does not offer an optical audio input. The Panasonic S2 model is an older model (last year), the newer model is the S30. Hope this will help you out.
