How do i connect a laptop to my home theater?

I have a Dell Studio 15, a Sony Bravia KLV-40S550A with multiple HDMI Inputs, and a Sony Home theater DAV - DZ790K with a single HDMI output port., and component and video ports. I have connected the home theater to the TV through Video 1 (set in output mode) and the HDMI cable. When i connect the Laptop to the TV through the HDMI cable, i get good audio and video from the TV, but I am unable to get the 5.1 output from the home theater system to play. How do i get the audio output from my laptop to play on the home theater system?

On many flatpanel HDTVs you would simply connect the optical audio output on the back of the TV to an optical input on the home theatre receiver and presto, surround audio (assuming the TV program is in surround). However, you Bravia only has analog stereo audio outputs so you can't do it. Similarly you only have an HDMI out on your HTIB system and no HDMI in so you can't send the PC video and audio signal to the HT over HDMI. I think you are out of luck. Unfortunately you are in a common position of many people overtaken by the switchover to HDMI, being stuck with equipment inadequate for the connections they want to make. You would be better off in the long run to get a proper A/V receiver with HDMI inputs and output(s). In general HTIB systems like your DAV-DZ790K are very limited, poor performers and not of great quality. They are relatively inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. Sorry.
