How to connect speakers to a powered subwoofer?

  • I have a 100W Sony W2500 Powered Subwoofer. I would like to connect to speakers to it. But when I plug in the speaker inputs into the subwoofer no sound comes out. The subwoofer is connected to an amp. But i'm maxed out on the watts on the amplifier. So i would like to use the watts on the subwoofer. Am i doing something wrong?? There is an IN and Out input on the sub. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

    The RCA jack (LFE - low-frequency effect) is the line level input for the subwoofer. If you have a surround receiver with an LFE output, run an RCA cable from that output to this input. You then have the power amp in the receiver to drive the other speakers. If you don't have an LFE output on your amplifier, run the speaker wires from the speaker output terminals on the receiver to the IN terminals on the subwoofer. Then hook up another pair of speaker wires from the OUT terminals to the speakers themselves. The subwoofer will tap the bass signals off the speaker inputs and send them to the subwoofer amp. The rest of the audio signals will then be sent to the speakers via the OUT terminals.

The reason your subwoofer has speaker inputs and outputs is so that it can be used with a receiver that doesn't have a subwoofer pre-out. The way it works is, you would run the left and right channel speaker wire to the input jacks of your subwoofer and then from the sub outputs to each speaker. This allows the subwoofer to fill in the low signals from the left and right channels. These are not for powering external speaekrs. It just doesn't work that way.
