Help with home audio system setup?

  • Hi, I would like to upgrade my home audio and have a brand new setup. What I want is to have speakers in every room, but to be able to choose which room of speakers I want on at any time, so for example just the kitchen speakers, or just the living room ones, or sometimes all of them when im having a party. Iv got a picture of the layout of my downstairs and the layout of the speakers I would like: http://s628.photobucket.com/albums/uu4/joegy525/Jarg/?action=view&current=Roomspeakerslayout-1.png I would like to be able to use the computer, TV and radio speakers individually at any time, but also connect any room up I want from a single source, ie the computer at any time. Also, a place plug in normal 3.5mm jack audio such as an ipod at any one time would be nice. Please help me, as I am pretty audio illiterate! Regards, Joe

    Hello Joe Yes you are wanting a whole house multiroom audio system. This requires prewire from a central equipment location to each room you want sound, for both speakers and a control keypad in the same room. You will also need a multiroom audio system that can distribute multiple sources to any room of the home. There are a number of different systems out there, it will depend on the amount of control you want to have and your budget. There are a number of systems out there each with different advantages' The new kid on the block and one of the least expensive is from Contol 4, its reasonably priced and you can add to it as budget and time permits. Elan makes a nice little system as well they have been around for a while, it will do pretty much anything you throw at it, is not cheap and requires programming. The best out there is from Crestron, they are the most sophisticated of them all and will allow you to control anything that is controllable. It is very expensive and requires extensive programming. You will want to do as much homework on the system you want as well as the dealer and installation services they provide. Very important to purchase this type of system from a autherized dealer with years of experience is licensed and has done many of these types of systems. What you want to do is very complicated and can not be done with just a receiver. It is not designed for that purpose and can not handle all the speakers you want to connect. There are multiple power amplifier in the market for that type of use and they are very expensive. If you have no experience in audio and video connection and some carpentry experience you need to contact a specialist. Best Buy have the geek squad but probably will not have the experience to do this. High end audio store is the best place to do the job. Unless you have around $10,000 or so to spend, they won't even take on the job. Hope this will help you out.

I suggest you hire the GeekSquad available at BestBuys. Since you admit you are audio illiterate - you will have to learn the components by googling such as Home Theater, AudiO Speakers, Audio distribution, Amplifier, Surround System, 7.1 vs 5.1, Dolby etc. Learning or in the least getting to know these terms and how they are applied can save you bucks.

You'll need a speaker distribution box with impedance protection along with an amp that can handle all the speakers. I'd go to an installer or (at least) a high end store and inquire about it. It's a complicated setup and the wiring alone will be a challenge unless you know how to fish wire through ceilings.

contact your local home audio/video specialty store and ask for installation services. What you want is a very complicated setup that will require specialty components that arent used commonly.
