Why does my Onkyo Receiver keep turning off whenever I play Rock Band?
-
I have had an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver for about a year now, and recently whenever I play rock band it shuts down. I can watch movies and play other games on the PS3 without it crashing though. The owners manual says that the receiver is going into protection mode. I figured that this meant that there must be a short in the wiring somewhere, so I hooked each rock band instrument up individually directly into the PS3. It crashed every time. I hooked everything (PS3, Speakers, TV, etc) up to my old 504 receiver and had the same problem (The only difference in the way I hooked it up is that I used Component cables instead of HDMI). I don't think it's the Receiver since both did the same thing. One thing I have noticed is that some of the speakers are beginning to have a buzzing sound to them. It is really annoying and seams like it has gotten worse now that it is hooked to the old receiver. I read somewhere that the speaker wires could be touching, but I have checked this and even rewired the speakers to make sure this wasn't the case. I also doubt it's the volume because it is louder when I watch tv then when it crashes with rock band. I don't know what's wrong and am really confused. Someone please help me. THANKS!!!

Answer:
I was gonna say this usually happens when the speaker wires are touching, but you obviously rewired everything. You said that it's not the volume, but you could eliminate the possibility by muting your receiver while playing rock band. Try to also unplug all of your speakers from your receiver while playing rock band. Try to just play rock band with the PS3 controller. When you said it crashed when you hooked up the instruments individually, do you mean your receiver went into protection mode? And if it did, did it do it right after you hooked up the instruments? Are you passing both audio and video through HDMI to your receiver? Or do you have an optical cable going from your PS3 to your receiver as well? Try to use the rca cables that came with the PS3 and hook up the stereo audio cables to your receiver and see if it still goes into protection mode. I'm just trying to give ideas to try to isolate the problem, hope it helps.
