Do older TVs support surround sound systems? How do I know?
-
Do TVs specifically have to support Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound for a system to work? I have a 10-year old TV that is fine and I would like to add surround sound - but will it work? I just have standard RCA audio output jacks. If the dolby stuff doesn't work, will I still get basic, non-surround sound audio from my surround sound system? Also - what kind of audio output jacks do new, HDTVs have? Is it still RCA? Thanks!

Answer:
5.1 surround sound is usually a separate source from a dvd player with 5 speakers and .1 is the sub woofer tvs do not have this function as the speakers are all on the set itself tv sets are stereo or dual sound or mono you will need to buy a separate system if you want 5.1 there is even 7.1 at the moment with just tv you will get stereo sound for 5.1 you will need front centre left and right speakers left and right rear speakers behind you and a subwoofer next to tv for base all connected to a separate amp

You won't get DD5.1 from an analog TV. You will probably get analog surround, AKA Pro Logic. If you have a cable or satellite box, you can likely get a DD stream from that, but it will likely be Pro-Logic on a DD2.0 stream, on most SD channels. Modern HDTVs have a digital coax and/or an optical out to get digital surround from its built in tuner, and sometimes from HDMI (most sets though, seem to downmix digital audio on HDMI to stereo).

An old type TV has an internal Tuner, and decode Stereo signals available at the rear White and Red RCA connectors, to be hooked up to a Stereo System. If you have a Satellite Receiver or a DVD player with Dolby Digital or Surround outputs, then you would connect them to a DD 5.1 Home Theater System. It would be best to use the Optical or Coaxial output (if available). HDMI is another option.

>Do TVs specifically have to support Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound for a system to work< Yes. You can get sound out of your TV with just the red and white audio jacks, but it will just be stereo and not dolby digital 5.1 sound. New TVs have HDMI or other true digital inputs & outputs.

It can work, the quality may just not be as good. All you need are the RCA jacks. I have an HDTV and it still has RCA jacks just more of them and they also other coaxial jacks for different types of additions and UBS ports.
