Will a new home theater receiver work with my old sub?
-
hi, i had a panasonic home theater with built in dvd player that i purchased a little while ago for $500. the receiver just broke but the speakers are still good, they are tower speakers. i would like to keep them because throwing them away would just be a waste of money and i am a little tight on money now. heres are the specs: two tower speakers are 190 w each and the rear speakers are 90 w each center speaker 320 w and sub 320 w. will this work if I purchase a used home theater (ones without built in dvd player) lets say yamaha, onkyo, or sony. i have heard that it may work and it may not especially the sub. so i would like to know if it really works or what to look for because i dont want to buy a used home theater receiver and then be stuck with one that doesnt work. any advice? thanks

Answer:
The mid-high speakers should work, since they are powered by the receiver. The sub you should worry about, since HTIB systems usually power the sub along with the rest of the speakers, and proper surround receivers expect the sub to have its own amplifier.

Yes you should be able to use just about any speakers with any receiver. The only issue you may run into is the type of connector used to attach the speaker to the receiver, but you can always work around this, if it's got a different connector you can just cut the connector off and replace it with the right one from Radio Shack.

The primary problem you might notice is that impedance is maybe a little different between the speakers Like the speakers that came with your panasonic unit are probly 6 ohm or maybe even 3 ohm if you put these speakers on an 8 ohm receiver then it will produce a beautiful plume of white smoke and your new stereo will then be a paper weight. Look at the impedance on your speakers there is a number with a small horseshoe next to it that is the impedance if it isnot on the speakers it will be on the unit itself probly a tag on the back or bottom. If the speakers you have are 8 ohm then you are gold. You can put 8 ohm speakers on a 4 ohm amp and they will work only a little quieter so check your impedance it does matterespecially if you are spending a lot of money of if money is tight. I hope this helps
