How to hook car amp/sub in home?

Can you hook up a car subwoofer to a home stereo reciver?

  • ????????????????????????????????????????… 10in rocford fosgates in my house running to a kenwood family line reciver.i just want to know if a speaker is a speaker and you can hook it up to a car or a home or whatever reciver you want.does it matter if its a car or home reciver.

  • Answer:

No, home audio receivers don't typically have amplification built in for a subwoofer. Normally they just have a preamp output for the sub. Also, car speakers are typically lower impedance than home audio speakers. Depending on the impedance of your woofer, you may be able to use it with a subwoofer plate amplifier. These are usually designed to work with 4 ohms. http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=505 Don't expect good quality, car woofers typically have very stiff suspension enabling to work in small boxes with higher resonance frequencies than home audio woofers. They depend on room gain due to being in the small space of a car. Once you put them in the house they don't have that advantage and they typically will not play low bass, they will just be really boomy distorted mid bass. It's generally just not a good idea to try to make car audio stuff work in home audio applications. mk

If the subwoofer is passive, then it should be driven by a receiver with speaker line level connection. Home theater receiver is usually line-level sub-output designed for powered sub-woofer.
