PS3 Blu-ray surround sound to my dvd surround sound system?
-
At present I have a Panasonic Viera TV(Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ800A), a PS3(80GB) and a Panasonic surround sound system(Panasonic SC-PT865W). I have set up the TV and the surround sound and I have the PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI, this all works fine, except I now want to connect my PS3 to my surround sound so I can play Blu-ray discs and have surround sound from my PS3 coming through the surround sound system. I thought maybe connecting the PS3 to the surround sound system through a Digital Optical Audio cable might work, but I'm not sure. So what i really want to know is, is this possible, if so what type of cable do I need... and what settings do I put the PS3's audio output on.

Answer:
Yes, you' re correct. Connect HDMI from PS3 to TV for video and optical cable from PS3 to system for audio. You have to set optical on PS3 sound settings.

Yes, you can. Review your Owner's Manual for the right Optical Linking Cable to use, and check out the examples the Manufacturer recommends for hookup, settings, and operation. I hope this will work well 4 U!

Optical cable is your only option. Connect it from the PS3 to the surround sound system, then adjust the PS3 audio output settings to "optical" and "bitstream". EDIT: "Actually the easiest way to do this is to run an optical cable from the audio out on the back of the tv to the surround system." That is incorrect information. Your TV doesn't pass surround sound audio, so doing this would only give you two channel audio. To quote page 41 of the TV's manual: "When audio from other equipment connected to this unit via HDMI is output using “DIGITAL AUDIO OUT” of this unit, the system switches to 2CH audio." http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TH42PZ800U.PDF

Actually the easiest way to do this is to run an optical cable from the audio out on the back of the tv to the surround system. If you do what the others have suggested you will have to go into the setup menu of the PS3 and change the audio out to optical. This will work fine but you will no longer have any sound running to the TV which means that you will always have to have your sound system turned on or go into the menu each time and change the settings when you only want sound to come from the TV. If you run the optical cable from the back of the TV then you will have sound at the tv and at you sound system. Because you are connect to the TV with HDMI then the optical will still process the 5.1 audio to the sound system.
