Do I need a dtv converter box for each TV I have?

Need help with portable tv and dtv transition/converter box?

I want to buy a portable tv for the holidays and it says that the unit will need a converter box to be operated. The digital television transition only applies to stations that use the public airwaves to transmit their programming signals. what does this mean? i live in NY and the signal strength is strong. if anyone knows about this and knowledgeable, if someone could help me out with this and explain it im simpler terms, id appreciate it, many thanks and happy holidays.

I would not recommend you buying that portable television then. With the transmission of digital channels now the majority of portable televisions do not require a converter box. If you go to Best Buy or Radio shack they already have portable HDTV televisions from 3 inches to 9 inches and they have built in digital tuners, so do you do not need to purchase any converter box.
