Do I need an amplifier for my speakers?

How do I power speakers that need an amplifier with an output from a full integrated stereo receiver?

  • I have a Denon AVR 1611 stereo receiver that I use for integrating my various inputs. I recently received a couple very nice Boston Acoustics speakers, but I have come to realize they need their own dedicated amplifier. I figured out the Denon does not have enough power - when I connect them directly they do not even produce audible sound until I turn the volume control up to levels that would otherwise be unbearable, and then once they start to get loud enough the receiver kills itself and powers off. I am wondering about an example of what kind of amp to get, and then how I go about wiring an output from my receiver into it to send to the speakers? Thanks much!

If 75 watts doesn't get you any more than tiny sound from the BAs, then I'd suggest that there's something wrong with the wires between them and the Denon.

I have to agree with Andre. The Denon is a decent unit and should totally be able to handle 2 Boston Acoustics. Are you sure you have them wired to the "A" speaker outputs? Are these the only speakers attached? Are you sure you dont have a headphone jack plugged in so the speakers are normally disabled? It sounds like your speakers may be defective. What about your other speakers? Try wiring your old speakers to the left/right outputs and make sure they produce sound at sane volume control position. Then turn the power off and wire in the Bostons and turn things on. If the Bostons dont make similar sound - the newly acquired speakers may have issues.
