I am looking to buy new speakers and don't what to buy?
-
I have been listening to JBL N38 speakers on and off for about fifteen years. They are holding their own and are getting long in the tooth. I really like these speakers but once again they are getting old. Just like me they have seen too many parties and need too be retied. I am considering a new set of JBL's and will probably go that rout but I see many new speakers in the same price range that I might prefer.

First decide how much you want to spend and stick to your budget. Do you have room for floor standing towers or would bookshelf speakers be better. Do you intend to use for the front channel of a home theater or surround sound system? Big box stores like Best Buy are popular as they offer what they feel are popular equipment at a good price, but the sales force is mainly untrained. Go to a retailer that doesn't sell washers to get the best advice but remember these folks mostly work on commission. KEF, BostonAcoustics, Polk, Klipsch offer products that sound good at a reasonable price. Also listen to Definitive Technology and probably the best sound for your buck, Paradigm. Take your own cd's and spend at least a day listening at different volume levels.

I presume you missed out 'know' between "don't" & "what" ;-) Why not visit a few demonstration rooms? Try 'Home Theatre' specialists, they generally have a good stock of (Decent) speakers or any other places/friends/associates etc. Your JBL's are not that special, they do lack depth in the stereo imaging department and you will find a lot better. Listen to MANY as you can! I actually like to make it a days outing touring the various stores, it's a pleasure rather than a chore. When you visit 'shops' take along a cd or two of YOUR favourite music for comparison and bear in mind a speaker will sound different in your room than the store (the sales people should know all about this) Once you have a FEW speakers in mind try places like ebay, maybe you can pick up a used or ex-demo set cheaper (Therefore you can up your original budget!) Floorstanders are making a pleasing come back because of 'proper' Home Theatre and quality CD audio (SACD etc)
