How will i know if i need a outdoor antenna for hdtv?

Still need a DTV converter after having a HDTV antenna?

  • I had this HDTV antenna from radioshack for 4 years now. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2131034&tab=summary I want to know if i have to purchase a converter box. Please, only answer if you truly know what you are talking about. Apropos, I live in the south Chicago suburbs and use comcast BASIC (no cable box, just regular coax cable from the outside) cable. Do i need a converter box for that as well? Thank you for your cooperation.

    There is no such thing as an HDTV antenna. What that and others marketed as "HDTV" antennae, are really just antennas engineered to to work on what will be left of the TV broadcast spectrum post transition. And they are just antennas, they do not provide an analog signal for older analog only TVs. You will still need a convertor box for them. As fro cable, you may not need a box for cable, that would be up to the cable company to decide, but if you do, most of the antenna convertor boxes will not work on cable. You will need them from the provider, or purchase one(s) that are capable of QAM tuning.

If your tv has an hdtv tuner then know if it's analog then yest. If it's just hdtv ready then get yourself a tuner instead.
