How to connect laptop to tv by HDMI?

i just bought an hdmi cable but it wont connect to my akai tv? i have tried : - looking for other channels - turning off both tv and laptop to reset - tried to connect it to my dvd player my laptop and tv doesnt seen to be recognizing the cable please help. i need step by step instructions. like : -what channel it should be on and what i have to do with my laptop. ive also tried to extend my monitor but my tv doesnt show anything and ive tried presing f7and func
