What does Rear RCA output mean?

RCA to HDMI cable - is it a scam?

  • Ok, so I bought a RCA to HDMI cable from ebay to connect a HD camera to a monitor but have since learnt that these cable are a scam as you need an expensive adapter to convert analog to digital. I emailed the seller and they replied saying it is for "connecting from PC/Laptop VGA to the TV, Projector or equipment. The VGA card must support component video (Y, Pr, Pb) signal output function" What does this mean? I thought VGA was this: http://www.google.com.au/imgres?q=vga&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&sa=N&rls=en&biw=1389&bih=667&tbm=isch&tbnid=V-7fvFeBe-WlNM:&imgrefurl=http://msy.com.au/default.jsp%3Fcategory%3D108&docid=mT13ijjZUJmH9M&imgurl=http://msy.com.au/pimages/cable/VGA.jpg&w=400&h=300&ei=jd64TuivAsvQmAXmuZjwBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=752&vpy=184&dur=706&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=154&ty=83&sig=115908864943870692724&page=1&tbnh=131&tbnw=182&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0 This is the cable I bought: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160657786738&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:AU:1123#ht_6181wt_922

  • Answer:

By VGA card they meant graphics card. Only old laptops support RCA, so you maybe out of luck. Your cable probably was a scam, because a cable can't convert analog signals to digital signals without hardware decoding. However, DVI-D to HDMI cables are great because they're both digital and HDMI is basically a slimmed down DVI connection.

There is no way that cable would work. They talk about the RCA on the cable being red, green, blue, but the picture shows yellow, red, white. Neither one would work to go to HDMI, but they still need to at least get their listing figured out. They try to cover it up by saying the colors don't matter. They also claim it's a 1080p audio/video cable. Well, they say it's component video red, green, blue. That would be video only. Where is the audio they're claiming? At the very least, their listing is extremely confusing. It's tough to tell if they are intentionally confusing to make you buy their cable, or if they just have no clue what they're talking about.

I think it would only work the other way round, and at that the video signal will not be anything like hi-def. The video signal will amount to nothing more than composite at the receiving end; the yellow RCA plug goes to the video in of an analog TV.
