Computer Speakers vs. Home Theater System?
-
I plan to buy some new speakers to hook them up with my laptop and my LCD TV. I watch movies and listen to music at home a lot, so sound quality is pretty much the key factor here. That of the home theater systems is great, but I don't want to pay for the DVD or Blu ray player that comes along with the system. Should I still invest in a home theater system, or should I save up to buy some really good computer speakers? Please give me some suggestions! Thanks! Btw, my budget is around or below $350.

Answer:
It depends on how you listen Computer speakers are designed for near field listening where the listener sits relatively close to the speakers where dedicated home theater speakers are designed to filling an entire room with sound and for less intimate sitting...take a look at the Boston Acoustic CS 2310 5.1 speaker system for a good surround speakers system in your price range...also the polk audio RM 6750 but home theater speakers will not play without an AV receiver also....AV Receivers start around $150 and up...If your just going to sit in front of the computer and watch movies then computer speakers would be a better buy....

Computer speaker do not provide you much power at all and you can not use it with your tv. Those home theater in a box are not flexible for adding anything and they are low quality and do not last. Take a look at an Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.a receiver and a set of speakers for under $400. You can connect you computer to it along with your tv. You can demo the system at Fry's Electronic. Hope this will help you out.

My suggestion to you is buying a digital speaker system which could be used both as home theater as well as an multimedia speaker system. i would prefer Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker System which is so powerful and cost effective as a home theater system. hopefully it has all inbuilt decoders like dolby, dts etc. it would be one stop solution for your home entertainment. honestly you are better buying good quality rather than power, For example look at www.whathifi.com and see what they say. I have bought a few things on their reccomendations and i have NOT been dissappointed

With that budget you would do better to buy a computer set of self powered (active) speakers with a decent little sub maybe logitech

computer speakers are good enough.
Do not get one of those 'home theater in a box' kits. Yeah, they're cheap, but almost all of them lack any sort of additional inputs you'd need to get surround sound from a game system, your DVR, etc. Using computer speakers will work...but only if the space you watch TV in is very small. I used to do this for my old bedroom, where the space I watched TV was about 7'x7'. It worked fine but when I bought my house, the speakers just weren't powerful enough for my new living room. At the same time, the computer speakers were not compatible with my new AV Receiver. What I would do is buy a really cheap receiver - even a used one off eBay will work. Spend most of your money on the speakers. After all, that's the important part, and good speaker will last virtually forever even as you upgrade your receiver.
