How to hook up surround sound to tv and ps3?

I am lookking into getting a new tv and getting surround sound home system for it. If i wanted to hook the surround sound up to play whenever the tv played all i would have to do is run a hdmi cable from the dvd/amplifier to the tv, and another hdmi cord from the ps3 to the tv. Would that make the ps3 have surround sound
