What subwoofer should I buy?

What kind of subwoofer and reciever should i buy?

  • im planing to buy a bose 301 for rear speaker and bose center speaker, but i dont know what reciever & subwoofer should i use on this speaker, by the way, is a subwoofer and center speaker necessary? i like watching concerts.

  • Answer:

Subwoofer and center speaker will make the concerts sound much more realistic. In fact when audiophiles talk about good speakers one term used is how accurate of a sound stage they present. Shut your eyes and you should be able to almost "see" the drummer slightly off to the left the bassist on the right and the lead guitarist off to the left of the drums. The singer should be front and center (center speakers guarentee this although good front speakers should be able to produce an accurate "ghost" speaker in the center like there was really one there. Secondly Bose are power hungry speakers. They measure this as an SPL reading in the spec literature. Efficinet speaker run over 100 and avg speakers run about 92-98. Bose have trouble getting to 90 on some models. That makes them the audio equivalent of a Hummer where efficiency is concerned. you will want a powerful high current amplifier/receiver. Denon caters more to current last time i checked. Current is more important than wattage. Lastly, since Bose cater to a more rich and full spectrum sound from the get go, you can probably get away with a smaller powered subwoofer rather than bigger. If the Bose are in a 15 x 15 room an 8" will probably suffice. If room is bigger go with a 10". Its sounds like a cheap way out to say this, but often times with speakers, the thumb rule is the more expensive the better. There are usually (i stress usually)legit reasons for the cost difference. But if a $90 special sounds good to your ears who cares. Get what sounds good to you and forget the hype. I have heard some surprisingly good speaker systems at the local Radio Shack and I am a guy who spends $20K on high end systems. So get out there and listen. There are diamonds in the rough. hope this helps

If you are planning on getting into home theater, I think you should but an integrated system, that is a complete theater in a box type thing, so all the speakers & receiver will be compatible. When you start mixing & matching like you plan, the sound will not be combined or mixed right, because all the parts are unmatched. Yes you need a sub woofer & center speaker, because you will have no bass( the right bass) & without the center speaker, true surround sound is not there. Most things are recorded in surround sound, especially concerts.
