What blu-ray movies have great surround sound, and will show of my surround sound setup.?
-
I'm getting a samsung 7.1 home theater surround sound setup, and i want to know what movies really have the 'wow' factor, that will really sound great in surround sound. I prefer action/adventure/thriller/suspense movies or even horror. But feel free to suggest any movies that would sound great in surround sound. thanks

Answer:
If you want to show off your surround sound setup I would first recommend getting a surround sound setup worth showing off. HTiB's are crap. You're much better going with individual components from companies that specialize in speakers and electronics. It is more expensive, but even if you only go with 5.1 it is worth it. A couple weeks ago I read somewhere only 125 movies are actually recorded in 7.1. For everything else you don't see any benefit.

Grab Pearl Harbour and Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray. They both have incredible audio scenes.

Wow, American Idle's response was a little harsh! The sad thing is that he's absolutely right. You're not going to get much "wow" factor from any movie on any HTiB. It won't matter how good the sound track is if you don't have equipment capable of accurately reproducing it. There is a long list of Bluray movies being generated in a thread on the AVS Forum DIY section right now. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1294892 The thread starts basically with the same question as yours and as the thread goes on, the list gets longer. I'm planning on printing it out myself for my own benefit. Most of these movies are being recognized in the forum for the low frequency content. Specifically, subsonic content. For this stepping up from an HTiB to a conventional separates system will not do you much good, only hard core DIY sub-woofer designer/builders get the benefit of this ultra low frequency content in the sound track. Very few commercial subwoofers are capable of getting much useful output at these frequencies without significant harmonic content and noise. So if you want real "wow" factor you have to put together a decent separates system as American Idle suggest and you have to add to that a custom designed monster subwoofer capable of subsonic frequencies with low distortion. Sorry if myself and American Idle have come across somewhat harsh. You are obviously about to proudly acquire your first home theater system and look forward to wowing your friends with it on a great action or other movie but unfortunately it really isn't as simple as just going out and buying an HTiB. If cost is a factor then you just have to look for deals. Find a used or a refurbished AVR (Receiver) and look into Internet Direct loudspeaker systems. Then look into DIY subwoofers... you will get a lot more for your buck with a kit from Parts Express http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=536 than you will with any commercial option from stores like Best Buy etc. None of the PE kits will be capable of low distortion subsonic frequencies however, doing this and doing it right requires unconventional designs. Still, these will provide much more wow factor than the typical sub places like Best Buy sells. mk
