When I hook up the surround sound all I got was TV sound, even with a dvd playing, what am I doing wrong?

It not a fancy system, I can hear the TV sound just fine, I can play dvd's but still hear the TV programs sound.

Answer:
You need to switch the source on the receiver. Most surround sound receivers can connect to more than 3 video/audio sources. Receivers cannot autodetect, so you have to manually switch the video and audio source on the receiver.
