Can I output my tv's sound to my blu-ray home theater system without losing the 5.1 ch effect?
-
Ok, I am thinking of buying this HTiB (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+1000W+5.1-Ch.+Blu-ray+Home+Theater+System/9775638.p?id=1218171551174&skuId=9775638) and it only has 2 audio inputs but i have at least five devices that I need to have surround sound on. Basically I don't feel like spending an extra $400 on a surround sound reciever and I think i have found a solution that would let me skip out on buying the reciever and a whole bunch of extra audio cables. If I plug all of my devices (xbox, ps3, cable box, etc.) into my tv like usual, run and optical audio cable out of my tv to my blu-ray home theater's audio input, and change my tv so it outputs the sound to the Blu-ray home theater system, will it still be surround sound? My tv is stereo so that won't downgrade the 5.1 signals or anything like that will it? If im not making sense or being clear enough please tell me. thanks to anyone who answers.

Answer:
The optical output port on a TV will only transmit audio from the TV's internal tuner, such as over the air broadcasts received by an attached antenna or basic cable. It can not forward audio from external devices connected to it. If optical inputs are limited on the receiver, you can buy a switch to allow more devices to be plugged in: http://www.google.com/search?q=optical+audio+switch&hl=en&tbs=shop%3A1&aq=3&oq=optical+ .

Hold out for a proper surround sound receiver. You can find a name brand one for well under $400, even under $200 with HDMI. Don't bother with a receiver that doesn't support HDMI unless it's almost free. You'll have to buy a separate Blu-ray player, but then you won't run the risk of losing your entire system because one part of it (the Blu-ray) dies or wears out. And you'll have a proper selection of inputs (optical, coax, HDMI, analog).

The optical audio output on the tv is a digital signal that can carry the 5.1 surround sound. You connect it from the tv to your home theater in a box. If the tv program is in dolby digital then you will have surround sound. Hope this will help you out.

You just get stereo sound ( 2 channel ) if you connect optical cable from TV to Home Theater System.
