TV output to surround sound receiver - Will all audio play in surround sound? Help, please!?
-
I'm new to the whole surround sound thing, and I can't seem to find a solid answer to this question anywhere else, so I'll ask it here and hope for the best. I'm thinking of buying a home theater setup for my bedroom, and what I want to know is - If I plug my TV's audio output into the receiver's audio input, will ALL the audio that normally comes from my TV play through surround sound? My main concern are my gaming consoles. I have them both connected to my TV via HDMI, but I want to play them in surround sound. Will the audio from the games play through the surround sound speakers if I hook up my TV's audio output to my receiver's audio input? Or do I have to connect my gaming consoles directly to the receiver? Thanks a lot in advance!

Answer:
Any external surround sound source (such as a cable box or gaming console) that is passed through the TV will only come out as stereo from the TVs digital audio output. To get surround sound, you must connect the source device directly to the surround sound receiver, either using a digital audio cable or a HDMI cable if your surround sound receiver has an HDMI input and output that lets you pass the HDMI through the receiver and on to your TV. Only the TV's internal tuner will pass surround sound out on the TVs digital audio output. All other sources of audio are downgraded to plain stereo before they are passed to the TV's digital audio output.

I would suggest If you want to hook it up to your tv only use the standard audio outputs and the digital outputs off the tv if it has it. That way when you pass digital signal through you will get better sound. The only way for most of the new eqipment to get to it's full potintial is to use a good reciever and route everything through it prior to the tv.

A straight question deserves a straight answer --- yes !! All you need to do is connect any audio cable from the input in from your TV to your input in to your receiver. what you will get is what is called pro logic surround. this is where the receiver takes a stereo input and converts it to surround sound. now this it not what is considered "true" surround sound, but the untrained ear will not know the difference.
