Can I use regular audio/video (yellow/red/white) RCA cables for component (RGB) video?
-
I'm pretty sure that component video is shielded, but some a/v cables are too. So will there really be any decrease in quality if I just use a (cheaper) a/v cable in place of a (more expensive) component cable? If so, will it even be noticeable? Has anyone tried this?

Answer:
Component(red, blue, green) for video, and composite( yellow) for video are both analog signals. You can use a standard composite video cable for component video, but you will need another cable to carry the audio signal. Just make sure that you match the colors on each end of the cable.

Yes you can if your talking about using the yellow red white as red blue and green. You really won't notice any picture difference. Just put yellow to green, red to red, and white to blue and you will get video. You will also need audio.

Component cables are meant to carry video only. They separate your basic video (yellow) into three base colors to give you a better picture vs. carrying all colors into one wire/cable. The other term for this "colorstream" cables. Your blue and red are the true base colors with the green representing all others colors or "missing" colors is the technical term. Now with your video being "colorstreamed" from its original source: DVD or cable box - you cannot use optional cables to carry the signal to a colorstream source (back of television input option). Therefore there is no possible way it will work. Now that does depend on your definition of working. Your picture looking all blue or all green may work for you. Colorstream cables carry an analog signal, but they are the purest form of analog, therefore give the best signal possible using analog cables. May suggestion is using colorstream cables when pulling from a colorstream source. Or simple use the A/V output and input if you are using A/V cables.

no because RGB is digital. an analog cable cannot work with digital. but it might still work anyway. give it a try. you wont hurt anything.
