Blu ray player questions (3D and multi region DVDs)?
-
Hi, I am first wondering if 3D blu ray players are any different to regular ones in any way other than that they accept 3D discs as well as regular discs? Can't see myself getting a 3D TV any time soon, but some with 3D are only a bit more expensive than regular ones so thinking I might as well, just in case. Also I am trying to find a blu ray player that plays multi region dvds (in the UK)... it's frustrating that all of Amazon's "MULTI REGION" players have a footnote telling you they only play region 2... Here is one from Play, seems to be what I'm looking for. But then the same player on Amazon is saying "Region 2 only".. so is the Play one the same and they just aren't telling me? - - - - - - - - - - http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/24437169/Sony-3D-Blu-Ray-Player-BDPS480-Multi-Region-With-Vivanco-HDMI-Cable/Product.html?searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&searchstring=blu+ray+player+multi+region&urlrefer=search http://www.amazon.co.uk/Latest-Player-BDPS480-REGION-Vivanco/dp/B005PPCA62/ref=sr_1_20?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323194048&sr=1-20 thanks

Answer:
3D Blu-Ray players will play 2D Blu-Ray discs and DVDs, just like a standard Blu-Ray player. Most Blu-Ray players on the market are Region free for DVDs. You would be very unlucky to buy one that is Region 2 only. "Multi-Region" means that the player is capable of playing DVDs from more than one Region. "Region free" means that a player is capable of playing DVDs from all Regions. My advice? Buy from a proper bricks-and-mortar shop and get the salesperson to confirm (in writing if you have to) that the player is Region free.

The only universal player that I know of is the OPPO 93 that sell for $499. It is one of the best player in the market today. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on the player. I purchased one a month ago, not because it was a universal player but for the quality of the sound and video compare to the others. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.
