Is a converter box really going to work?

i want 2 hook my laptop to my hdtv, my laptop only has vga port n tv only has hdmi. i want to surf the web on my big screen, so is a vga to hdmi converter box going to let me able to use the tv as a monitor? do i just buy a converter box, vga and hdmi cord? and can somebody tell me y i need to buy the converter box?
