How to hook stereo to a TV with input only?
-
recently bought a HTS. I have successfully hooked it up and can play and hear DVDs/games through my xbox, but I cannot hear sound from my tv. Whenever I hook the audio cable to my tv there is silence (it has 1 audio/1 video connector on the front of the tv, HTS has a L/R audio connector). Is there any way that I can connect my coaxial cable directly to my HTS and go through my HTS for sound to make the tv work? Model/make of HTS: RCA 1000W Home Theater System, RT2770 TV is a 23 inch Symphonic w/ front AV input. Went and bought an RF modulator last night. Hooked main coaxial (from wall) to rfmod, hooked another coax to tv. Hooked xbox to L/R audio & video input, hooked L/R audio output to stereo. No tv sound through stereo. Need more help!

Answer:
One way is to plug the TV cable into a VCR or something with a TV tuner (a DTV box would work too.) Now plug the VCR into your stereo system the same way the Xbox is connected. You'll use the VCR's remote to channel surf. Another way to do this is to use your TV's headphone jack. If your TV has a headphone jack, go down to Radio Shack and purchase a RCA-to-mini-jack audio cable. This should have a headphone jack on one end, and a pair of red/white female RCA jacks on the other. Now just get a pair of red/white audio cables (you can even use a standard A/V cable, and just use the red and white cables.) Now plug this into a separate audio input on your receiver - like the CD input (the actual input name doesn't matter - my Xbox is on my receiver's "DVD" input, for instance) Now when you want to use the stereo for your TV audio, plug in the headphone cable, turn on your stereo and set it to the proper input (e.g. CD) If you unplug the headphone jack, the sound will come from your TV's speakers as normal.

You need something with a TV tuner AND audio outputs. Maybe your cable box has audio output? A VCR would work too. You cannot get sound from a TV with no audio outputs. If your TV has a headphone jack that will work if you get a 3.5mm to RCA adapter cable: http://www.adorama.com/HOCMR203.html

You need to attach red/white audio cables from your tv's audio OUTPUT into your sound system's audio INPUT. Then you may also have to go into your tv's sound set up and tell it to use external speakers, not the tv's speakers.

WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE FOR TV SIGNAL INPUT? Cable box or Satellite box? Those inputs go to your HTS - NOT THE TV OUTPUT TO THE HTS. The only cable running to the TV should be the video cable from your HTS. All other components should be wired into the source inputs on the back of the receiver.
