How to get rid of 'surround sound' in headphones?

If I connect my LCD HDTV to powered computer speakers (headphones output), will I still get surround sound?

  • I don't want to use the RCA outputs because I can't control the volume with the TV remote...

  • Answer:

No, headphone outputs are stereo and therefore only have 2 channels of sound (right and left). If you connect to the RCA outputs in the back you will also get stereo sound only. The RCA outputs may have better sound quality due to being high impedance outputs instead of the lower impedance headphone outputs. The only way to get surround sound from a set of computer speakers is to have a speaker set capable of a digital input and connect that to the optical/digital coax output of the television or source.
