When did the Blu-ray player come out?

1080p upconverter dvd player question?

  • Toshiba has just come out with a 1080p upconvert dvd player that is suppossed to upconvert better than any on the market.I understand that this new EXD toshiba dvd player is not (by any stretch of the imagination) going to compare to bluray.I have a lot of "regular" dvds.Do not want to have to rebuy my entire library. My question is will toshiba EXD dvd player upconvert ("regular" dvd) better than blu ray?

  • Answer:

Not possible. 480 lines vs 1080 lines is what you start with. When you upconvert 480 to 1080, you still only have the data for 480 of those lines, no matter how fancy it is.

Your TV already up-converts standard def so you are paying for something to do a bit better job of a feature you already have. I suspect you could not really tell much difference unless you did a side-by-side comparison of the Toshiba DVD player with a BluRay player. Keep in mind that 480 was designed to fill a nine-inch tube TV. There is only so much "filling in the blanks" the electronics can do. And many of the up-converting causes artifacts. I have been watching lots of standard def DVD's on my BluRay player and it looks fine. (A lot better than standard def Fox Soccer channel). So I would go with a BluRay player before I considered a high-end up-converting player. Chances are a $180 Samsung BluRay player opens you up to real HD movies for the future, and will look quite good with standard DVD's.
