How do I set up my home theater?
-
I need a chart that shows me the connections and the wiring for a - TV - Blu Ray player (with internet hook up) - Cable (AT&T) - surround sound. What connects to what? who gets "in" what wire is "out"? I am so lost. Please help.

Hi Evelyn. The reason it is so confusing is that you have several different ways to do things. First: Is the cable box HD and has a HDMI output? Does your TV have optical out? I will give you generic advice, but not knowing your equipment - well, the advice is free. In general: - Order some HDMI cables from Amazon. The "Media Bridge" brand is decent and runs $10-30. - Run HDMI from your cable box to the first input on your TV. - Test this to make sure you get both sound and video. Call the Cable TV company for help if you need to. - Hook up the BluRay player to the TV with another HDMI cable. Get this to work so the TV plays both the sound and video. - Get an Optical Cable (also called "Toslink") and run this from the OUTPUT of the TV to an optical input on your sound system. Learn how to make your TV send the sound to your 'surround sound" system. With this setup you use the TV speakers for casual TV and DVD watching, but fire up the surround sound for more serious TV and movie watching. Hope this helps.

This is not a simple answer simply because there is no one right way to do it. There are many ways to do it and all of them will work. Which out goes to which in also depends on what type of connection each component uses. Ideally all the components would have HDMI coonectors. Then you could do the out HDMI from each source to one of the TV's HDMI inputs, hopefully your TV has enough for all of your components. Then you can run the digital sound out from your TV to your surround sound receiver. I recommend connecting this way over other ways because this way you don't have to have your receiver on to watch TV when you don't need the full surround sound system on. I would also add that most surround sound receivers now come with quick start diagram that will show you the various connection options. So you should check to see if you already have that. You can use that as a basic guide.

I can't your whole problem but the outputs from one device hooks to the input of another. The output & input refers to the signal.
