Need help setting up surround sound on my sony tv?

  • I have a sony tv and a sony AV receiver. The surround sound works when I'm on the input where the receiver/dvd player is, but not while I'm watching just normal tv (in my case just internet tv). I have NO other connections, no cable box or anything. I simply have the receiver connected to my tv via a hdmi and optical audio cable. Both the tv and the receiver are sony bravia capable, both have hdmi connectivity set to on, and the tv does recognize the dvd/home theater system as an input when i go to that specific input. Yet, when I go to bravia sync menu and try to find hdmi devices, nothing shows up. How do I get the surround sound to work?? I already called sony support and after an hour they told me to go buy a $25 optical audio cable..and it's still not working. Help!! Thanks.

    Provide a model number list of all the equipment you have and I'll tell you how to connect everyting so all will work properly.

In order to hear the TV audio through the receiver (And, I presume that you have speakers connected to the receiver), you need to connect the Audio Out from the TV to an Audio In on the receiver, then, when you want to hear the TV audio, you have to switch the receiver input setting to the one that matches the Audio In at the receiver. With most modern hidef TVs and HT receivers, that means a digital optical audio cable. The HDMI feeds video from the DVD to the receiver, then from the receiver to the TV. One doesn't usually run HDMI *from* the TV *to* the receiver for audio.
