How do I connect a dvd home system to a receiver?

Do I have to use the DVD receiver that came with my home theater system?

  • I got an RCA Home Theater System for Christmas and it came with a DVD player/receiver. According to the instructions, you have to connect the speakers to the receiver. I wanted to use the surround sound for my Xbox 360 and PS3, not an outside DVD player. So my question is, can I still install the speakers without using the DVD receiver to get sound from my Xbox and PS3? Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

  • Answer:

    Yes, you do.

Bang is correct. Those speakers only work with the dvd/receiver box that came with it. The parts are NOT designed to mix with other gear. And you cannot hook up un-powered speakers directly to your xbox or ps3. There has to be an amp somewhere like they have in self-powered computer speakers. That RCA 'system' is really a DVD player with speakers. It probably does not have an optical input so you can decode 5.1 from your HDTV or xbox or PS3.

You have a HTIB and it is not expandable, it is only good for playing your DVD's you can not hook up any thing else to it. Get rid of it and buy a good A/V receiver and some good speakers. With a good A/V receiver you can hook up your PS3 and Xbox, just make the receiver has enough hdmi inputs.
