If an xbox can manage 3d with a simple update to the firmware of it HDMI why can this not be replicated?

Xbox, sky etc have old HDMI versions not 1.4 installed and yet with a simple firmware update the can manage 3d outputs why can this not be replicated on say a reasonably high spec laptop with a HDMI output, or will it work aas longas the source file, disk etc is a 3d format such as side by side and the settings on the display are the same. Sorry its a bit of strange question but 3d graphics cards are not cheap neither are 3d blu ray players and it seems stupid that Microsoft can take a HDMI connection from 4-5 years ago and make it able to handle the very latest 3D technoligy why are we being forced to purchase expensive un needed products. Thanks in advance.
